Most Fuel-Efficient Gas SUVs of 2026

The most fuel-efficient gas-only SUVs of 2026, ranked by EPA combined MPG. Most "best MPG SUV" lists are dominated by hybrids — but plenty of buyers want an SUV with a conventional gas engine, whether to avoid hybrid complexity, the price premium, or simply by preference. This list is only for them: hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs are excluded. Each SUV is shown in its most efficient gas configuration, so the MPG number reflects the best a straightforward gas version can do.

How fuel efficiency is measured here

  • Ranked by EPA combined MPG — the blended 55% city / 45% highway figure on every new-vehicle window sticker.
  • Only conventional gas SUVs are included. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs are excluded — hybrids have their own ranking, and electric SUVs are covered separately.
  • Each model is shown in its most fuel-efficient gas trim, so the MPG reflects the best a non-hybrid version achieves.
  • Compact SUVs naturally top the list, but midsize and three-row gas SUVs are ranked here too so you can find the most efficient option in any size.

Frequently asked questions

What gas SUV gets the best gas mileage?
The most fuel-efficient gas-only SUV appears at #1 above, ranked by EPA combined MPG. Compact gas SUVs generally lead, but the list includes midsize and three-row models so you can find the most efficient gas SUV in your size class.
Why exclude hybrids from this list?
Because plenty of buyers specifically want a conventional gas SUV — to avoid the hybrid price premium, keep the powertrain simple, or by preference — and most "best MPG SUV" lists bury those options under hybrids. Hybrid SUVs are excellent on fuel and have their own ranking; this list answers the gas-only question directly.
How much can a fuel-efficient gas SUV save versus a thirsty one?
A lot over time. The difference between a ~30 MPG compact gas SUV and a ~17 MPG full-size one can run well over a thousand dollars a year in fuel at typical mileage. Fuel cost is one component of the MotiveGrid Cost of Ownership score on each vehicle's page.
Are these the most efficient trims or the base trims?
Each SUV is shown in its most fuel-efficient gas trim, so the MPG figure represents the best a non-hybrid version of that model achieves. Drivetrain choice (front- vs all-wheel drive) and engine option both affect MPG, and the most efficient configuration is the one ranked here.
